The review is meant for a different business

The text describes a place that is not yours.

All guides2 min read4 chapters

The review describes a visit that cannot have happened like that at your place: a dish you do not serve, a department that does not exist here, a car park that is somewhere else. The author was somewhere, just not with you.

How it happens

Most often with similar names in the same town. Two businesses with the same word in their name, a few streets apart, and the map suggests the wrong one.

Just as often with branches. Someone who was served badly at one branch of a chain later searches for the name and reviews the first result, not the location they actually visited.

And after a move or a takeover. The profile remains, the business behind it is a different one, and old experiences land with the new owners.

What makes the report hold up

Point to the passage in the text that does not fit, and write next to it what is actually here. Not: that was not us. But: the contribution mentions an underground car park, and our building does not have one.

For branches, it helps to say which location was probably meant. Google does not move reviews, but the mix-up becomes understandable, and that is half the battle.

The special case of a shared building

It gets harder when several businesses share the same address: a restaurant in a hotel, a practice in a medical centre, a shop in an arcade. Google lists separate entries there, but visitors often do not tell them apart.

Here the text usually helps less than the subject matter itself. Someone who writes that the room was noisy means the hotel, not the restaurant inside it, even without naming either. That is exactly what belongs in the report.

You can prevent this with your own photos and a separate category for each entry. The more clearly two entries differ, the less often an experience ends up with the wrong one.

What to do afterwards

Use the opportunity to check your own listing. Mix-ups also arise from vague details: a name that is too generic, a pin on the wrong side of the street, missing photos of the entrance.

After a takeover this is especially worthwhile. If the listing clearly reflects the business as it is today, it receives fewer reviews about a time that was not its own.

Key points

Mix-ups are easy to report, because they can be backed up by the text. And they are a sign that your own listing could be sharper.
