How long it takes for Google to decide

Google says several days. It feels like more.

The review has been reported, and then nothing happens for a while. This is the most unpleasant part of the whole process, because the review is still near the top of the profile and everyone reads it.

What Google itself says

Google’s help pages state that reviewing reviews usually takes several days. There is no fixed deadline, and anyone who gives you one has made it up.

The status of a report is shown in the review management tool. It shows whether a report is still being reviewed or has been decided. The decision is also sent by email.

Why it takes longer in some cases

Part of the review is automated, part is not. Clear cases such as an insult in the text are decided faster than the question of whether a competitor is behind an account. The more a person has to look at, the longer it takes.

The number of reports also plays a part. After press or TV coverage, a business sometimes receives dozens of reviews in a single day, and then the same review has to be done many times over.

What is pointless while you wait

Reporting the same review again speeds nothing up. It ends up in the same review, and several identical reports do not make the decision any faster.

Asking friends to report the same review does not help either. Google decides based on the review, not on the number of reports, and coordinated actions are themselves a violation.

What is really worth doing in the meantime

The waiting time is the best opportunity to put the rest of the profile in order: reply to open reviews, ask satisfied customers for their opinion, update opening hours and photos.

This has an immediate effect on the next reader while the removal is still pending. And it still has an effect if Google decides against the report in the end.

Key points

Several days are normal, several weeks happen. Following up speeds nothing up, a better profile helps right away.
